The Best Seafood on the Canadian West Coast

Sherri King - Girl on the Go Travel Adventures. Travel blogger, photographer, and travel agent.

Oh hey! I'm Sherri!

Welcome to my little place online where my two passions of travel and photography have come together. Nothing is more satisfying than visiting places in person that I’ve only read about in history books.

"Collect moments, not things."

It was a beautiful day when I visited Spirit Ridge Resort in Osoyoos for the Fire and Ice Festival. Where should I go on my next road trip?

Oliver and Osoyoos residents begin Christmas celebrations in style each year. I was fortunate to experience a few activities that helped kick off this season, courtesy of Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) @thompson_okanagan, Destination Osoyoos @osoyoosbc, and Tourism Oliver @winecapital.

From Light Up in Oliver where we enjoyed the experience with a large crowd, to celebrations and a concert in the park, to a wine-tasting Festival at Spirit Ridge Resort, there was something to do for everyone.

These events were part of the overarching “7 Celebrations – Reconnecting in the South Okanagan – Fire & Ice” throughout the region, and I was happy to partake in the few I did. It was well worth the drive to learn more about the Indigenous culture in the region and participate in Christmas celebrations with many others after a few difficult years.

We finished this trip with a stop at the District Wine Village where 13 wineries, a brewery, a restaurant, and a distillery surround an amphitheatre. There is also a vineyard as part of the Village property. Each winery and winemaker on the property share state-of-the-art equipment to help with the production of their VQA wines. We visited many of these and tasted their creations, all while enjoying Christmas music during a light snowfall. ❄️

Spirit Ridge Resort, Osoyoos, BC

This beautiful resort is located in Canada’s only desert around Osoyoos and is a place sacred to the Osoyoos Indian Band. The resort consists of 226 condos, suites, and villas, has a wonderful restaurant, a winery, and a cultural centre where visitors can learn about the Indigenous history of this region.

🏨 We stayed in a 2-bedroom suite which had a full kitchen so I can see this being great for longer stays of a week or more at a time! Summertime would be perfect so I could enjoy exploring local wineries, shopping at farmer’s markets for fresh fruit and vegetables, spending time by the pools at the resort, or taking advantage of their spa.

➡️ Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre
I find it important to learn about the lands and people of the places I visit, and it’s even more important to me now that I’m seeking information about my personal Indigenous history. At the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre at Spirit Ridge Resort, you can walk through indoor and outdoor exhibits which tell the stories of the area and people. It is well worth the visit!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍽️ Dining at The Bear, The Fish, The Root & The Berry
The Resort’s signature restaurant offers Indigenous-inspired cuisine in an unforgettable setting. My Eggs Benedict included beetroot cured salmon, poached egg and classic hollandaise over bannock. From my table, I looked out over the vineyard to Osoyoos Lake… the stunning view! I visited in the winter and do look forward to visiting again in the summer when the vineyard is ready for harvest.

This holiday season I visited @missionhillwinery for a wine tasting paired with delicious bites and a special tour of the beautifully decorated trees throughout the humidity-controlled barrel cellar and Visitor’s Hall. All trees were sponsored by local businesses in support of the @bcchf (BC Children’s Hospital Foundation) and a percentage of the proceeds from each experience was donated to the BCCHF. This Festival has been hosted at Mission Hill for over six years and has been a community tradition in BC for over 30 years.

My visit was courtesy of @missionhillwinery and @tourismkelowna
